Sugarcane plays a vital role in the economy of Pakistan as 99 % of the sugar produced in the country is obtained from this crop and only 1% from sugar beet. In Pakistan, sugarcane is grown on an area of 0.907 Mha with an average yield of 49.2 t/ha. Average yield of sugarcane in Pakistan is low as compared with other sugarcane growing countries of the world. The average sugar recovery of Pakistan is approximately 8.7% which is also one of the lowest in the world. Although a number of sugarcane varieties are being cultivated in the province of Sindh but due to the deterioration in their yield potential and resistance to insect pests over the years, there is dire need to replace these varieties with the new improved ones.
